*=the meaning here is “the distance between the character and the other people”, the way he behaves towards them.

**=Sometimes “star” can have the meaning of planet, so the “falling stars” may also mean “our fleeting planet”

***=The “discarded stones” are written in the same ways as “wasted stones” which are the pawn of the Go Game which have been wasted by the players because of a bad play. The meaning of the sentence here (and you have trust me in this because it’s too difficult to explain) it’s that after trying many times to find an answer without no result, there won’t be nothing that keep us from seeing the truth (which, according to the song is that “there’s no meaning in the reality”).

Words in italic are in English in the lyrics of the booklet.

The title means the we try in vain to paint over our anxiety of not being able to find a rational meaning to life, but the only truth is that there’s no meaning.

we even surpassed our expectation, however the answer brings no meaning.

We followed for too long the thread of the ideals, and before we could notice

take away on their backs the winter nights that stinged our faces with cold

How many years have already passed since we have a song?

No matter how much I longed for it, I can’t find an answer.

*=the term generally refers to the break time between two parts of an opera play or such. I think that in the context of the song it may mean that “we will go away before finishing our play”, referring to the band abrupt decision to split up, leaving their work unfinished.

**= the term used here is really specific and indicates the clearer part on the upper part of a liquid solution, in contrast to the sediments deposited on the lower part of it. If I had to guess, I’d say that the band is suggesting that once fan will accept that they are disbanding and let their emotions be quiet, they’ll be able to detach (become apathic) from their sadness.

9Goats Black Out has been the first Visual-Kei band I really loved. While I always admired their talent for linking together images from very different topics (their song “any” is still a masterpiece in this sense), I always struggled to grasp the meaning of some of their lines. Revising this song and its lyrics 9 years after the release, I feel like I finally have the necessary knowledge to translate and understand what they tried to convey.

The song is a very interesting opener for their last album. As many “farewell song” in the Visual-Kei scene, the lyrics try to paint the relation between artists and fans a love relationship. This songs sets from the start the theme for the album: they keep saying “it has been nice, but we don’t want you to suffer, let us go and forget us and enjoy that feeling that slowly fades away, that is 9Goats Black Out”. You can get from the many images used in the song (voices fading away in the noise, liquid solutions that split into their components, the band being unable to find a concrete answer despite their longing for it) and the final message written on the booklet of the album.

*Lyrics in italic are in English in the booklet, they are in a messy English therefore it’s hard to understand their meaning. A correction of those words may be something like:

I remember when I first watched the video, the crudeness of the image and of the lyrics as well left me without words: the way Dadaroma is able to criticize the world is unique and it’s something new in the Visual Kei scenario. Depicting people as fishes in dirty fish tank, striving for some clean water, is a really dark and powerful image, just as if we were drowning in our own everyday routine while not being able to love or hate the other, just letting them flow away as a normal day.

*= in case you haven’t noticed, here he’s clearly referring to his penis.

**= the word here has the more specific meaning of “holding something firmly between something” (including pinching something or holding something between chopsticks), but the implication is that she is not letting him escape.

***= usually, the image of the last train is used to indicate an activity that continues and a very late hour, forcing the characters to take the last train of the night, with the risk of not being able to go back home: if you lose this train, it will take hours before the first train of the morning. Basically, they fucked for a very long time and they lost the last train, so he’s basically inviting her to fuck again since they don’t have anything better to do.

Basically, it’s a song about choosing sex until the morning (of course, just for fun) instead of going back home and feeling lonely on the last train while remembering the past few hours of passion.

*=the leviathan is a mythic creature that, according to legend, kills its victims by making them drown in the waves that it creates. Also, in the super famous philosophy/politics book called “Leaviathan” written by Tomas Hobbes, this beast is used as an image to represent “the government/the establishment”. While I’m not too sure about the fact that there might be a link between this song and Hobbes’ book, I can think try to risk and interpretation and say that the composer chose this creature because of the way it kills its victim: he might want to underline the feeling of drowning in this reality, unable to think about the future”, which is a concept that comes back during the song.

**= there’s a very famous proverb in Japanese saying “the more you try to put things in your hands, the more things fall from your hands” which is basically meant to warn people against greed. The general structure of the proverb is here as well, but the meaning appears to be slightly changed, suggesting that “you can’t obtain something without letting go of something else” which, in our case, means that “you can’t obtain the future (or a perspective of it) unless you sacrifice your present happiness”.

10 posts after: some update

I don’t know why I’m writing such a post, probably I got cocky just as I saw the stats of the blog, but that’s not what matters.

What matters is that when I started this blog I wasn’t even sure I could translate songs from Japanese but, as you can see, I managed to. And along with this knowledge, I realized that my main goal while translating those songs is to convey their feelings: I want people who listen to those songs to have goosebumps just as I do, in such a way I think that Visual Kei may be seen as a “global experience” and not just as “some freaky thing from Japan”. Probably got too much idealistic there, but I’m not going to erase that sentence.

In short words, whoever you are, please read my translation, enjoy it, leave a like, a comment or anything, but please, please, don’t tell me that those words and those melodies left you nothing: let me know that my words can still convey the magic of the ones in Japanese.

The red lotus is a symbol for passion: the ideal world of which Diaura are speaking is one in whom people let go of their individual desire and live together. Such a dream is a utopia ( that’s why they talk about a shattered crystal: it is a symbol for “future”, but since it’s shattered it can’t reflect the ideals of who dreamt of it), but even so they keep on dreaming of it… why is that? Why they can’t just forget it? How can they dream perfection if they don’t even know what they desire? That’s the real enigma, which will stay there into their hearts, until someone will snatch it away along with their ideals.

If you pay attention, someone has anticipated his clock, and they still are wondering if they are right or wrong.

I weigh on the scale isolation and participation,  and even today I won’t lose my own self.

Keep on living is an easy task, you know, somewhat similar to digging up a withered water source,

and if you repeat the same thing time and time again, one day a different morning will rise.

Morning will come…

*=the concept that the band is trying to explain is a bit too complex to be summarized in a single, so I’ll do it here. The whole song is about finding some kind of indication on how to live one’s life, and one could think that people can understand how to live their life if they follow their ideal. But ideal are just images and so no matter how much one can try to link them and live by them, they are something different from reality and do not offer much of a suggestion.

**= this verb also hints that an object is chipped, therefore missing a part: in the case of the heart, the feeling of missing something is what drives us in our lives.

It felt good going through these lines after a long time: I revisited some passages and improved the general meaning of some passages. Revising the translation I realized how much I was projecting my personal experience at the time on the song, ending up completely missing the point of some lines, but the general message of track wasn’t too far off from what I had imagined.

I kinda miss Hello Sleepwalkers and the fact that this song still sounds so good to me, really leaves me thinking that there hasn’t been any band in the j-rock scene that has been able to surpass their writing style: so simple, yet so profound.
