9Goats Black Out – dye an unease Translation

Translation

I can’t see the answer, over and over, and, because of the distance* I rely on,

the impossible nonsense that we can keep on living on the same falling star** it’s just an ideal.

So, instead of covering the wrong colours with other paint,

rewind and get closer again to the sadness that doesn’t have any canvas.

Why not trust in reason. who is the killed?

“Calling you”

Why not trust in reason. who is the killed?

“Calling you”

please don’t say to me goodbye at tonight.

“It’s like weighing on thin ice, the sound of your breath and floating roots”

I don’t need an answer anymore, the red (of sunset) presses and intensifies the cries of cicadas.

A blast furnace completely filled with discarded stones*** will stop smoking.

The fleetingness of words is like a bird with no place to go

which sees the exit of the birdcage but doesn’t pay attention it.

Why not trust in reason. who is the killed?

“Calling you”

Why not trust in reason. who is the killed?

“Calling you”

please don’t say to me goodbye at tonight.

Notes and other

*=the meaning here is “the distance between the character and the other people”, the way he behaves towards them.

**=Sometimes “star” can have the meaning of planet, so the “falling stars” may also mean “our fleeting planet”

***=The “discarded stones” are written in the same ways as “wasted stones” which are the pawn of the Go Game which have been wasted by the players because of a bad play. The meaning of the sentence here (and you have trust me in this because it’s too difficult to explain) it’s that after trying many times to find an answer without no result, there won’t be nothing that keep us from seeing the truth (which, according to the song is that “there’s no meaning in the reality”).

Words in italic are in English in the lyrics of the booklet.

The title means the we try in vain to paint over our anxiety of not being able to find a rational meaning to life, but the only truth is that there’s no meaning.

9Goats Black Out – You Translation

Translation

In this confusion, you leave behind the superficial friendship

hidden in the gap between us who are starting to disappear.

While you keep crying, to wish that one day

our hearts will be entwined is premature.

But it has the same feeling as we were clearing the apathy between us, hasn’t it?

The curtains rise and what comes down is my personality.

And a love song wrapped in sadness echoes like a musical instrument.

Between the screams, the emotion that I can hear is

even superior to my imagination but my answer has no meaning at all.

One day, I’ll try my best to follow the thread of reason

but something like a place to return to will be already invisible.

Cherry flowers and Spring scatter, and with no doubt the days

and the Winter nights on our backs consume our faces…

how many years have already passed? I wish I could sing a song about this

but I can’t even see the tomorrow,

so let’s just make the moon fall down, as if tonight was our last night.

In the wind of the night petals dance, the trees sway

and in the blue sky now I recognise the melancholy.

I would like to remember until what moment it was there,

but even so I can’t see the tomorrow,

so let’s make the snow fall in the middle of the night

while I say that tonight it’s not our last night.

Notes and Other

I happened to listen again to this song and the album “Calling” (which is, just so you know, the first japanese album I bought) and I decided to try to translate every song of that album: it will take a bit, there won’t be any romaji for now since I hate writing it, and it won’t be easy but I’ll do it anyway.

This is obviously a love song, but the main character in here is so melancholic that he can’t even imagine the future with his/her beloved and just wish time to pass by without him/her noticing it.

Dadaroma – 溺れる魚(Oboreru Sakana) Translation

Kanji-Romaji

Translation

Title: Drowning Fishes

In this transparent fish tank world
the fallen drop of black ink can’t be scooped out
and the fishes open their mouths
and get soaked (by the ink) as well.

Truth can be bought by money,
mannequins disposed in line
on the pedestal of conspiracy,
but even so nobody seem to suffer.

The definition of the freedom to force.
People who cannot notice manipulated.
Stop talks. no, I am.*

(Everyone is like) drowning fishes in a fish tank,
like birds in a cage, in a narrow sky
Without us noticing it, we,
our love, our hate,
are disappearing, vanishing
until only dark, only dark, only dark remains.

The beautiful things reflected in the television
worsen our sight
And even the the warmth that barely remains,
what is its price?
Even that will disappear, vanish
until only dark, only dark, only dark remains.

The definition of the freedom to force.
People who cannot notice manipulated.
Stop talks. no, I am.*

(Everyone is like) drowning fishes in a fish tank,
like piled up dust on a light
The ones wearing suits are treated as important,
we call them heroes…
is this, is this
just all?

A plane fell, many died
and you must forget the TV news in the tomorrow.
“Two child who often played together
committed suicide, have you heard that?”
“Poor souls…”  “That’s true…”
but you can’t even remember their names.

Come on, let’s sleep tonight
turn off the lights
and wriggling say “goodnight”
to the real people, to the desires and to the world…

Notes and other

*Lyrics in italic are in English in the booklet, they are in a messy English therefore it’s hard to understand their meaning. A correction of those words may be something like:

“We force the definition of freedom

and the people who don’t notice it are being manipulated.

Enough talking, I am…”

I remember when I first watched the video, the crudeness of the image and of the lyrics as well left me without words: the way Dadaroma is able to criticize the world is unique and it’s something new in the Visual Kei scenario. Depicting people as fishes in dirty fish tank, striving for some clean water, is a really dark and powerful image, just as if we were drowning in our own everyday routine while not being able to love or hate the other, just letting them flow away as a normal day.

Dadaroma – 雨のワルツ(Ame no Warutsu) Translation

Kanji-Romaji

Translation

Title: Rain Waltz

Filthy rain. You become filthy by rain.

“greed”
The grown-ups try to make money
from pure and childish dream.
We keep on living without realizing.

“greed”
The teacher said that we’re
all equal since we were born.
He was only reading out what
was written in the book.

In this world, which seems a crystal ball where only the things I don’t want to see float, only curtains are sold.
What children keep in their hands, rather than small guns, are refined and anonymous rifles.
The wind which follows the bodies from the gaps between the building, wholeheartedly stops without anyone noticing it
and wriggling clouds cover the sun of tomorrow.

The muddy water turns into
clouds and rains heavily over the world.
We believe it to be blessed rain
and drink it without doubting it.
The small flower which blooms by
the wayside grows from it.
A filthy colored flower blooms.

It hits me

this rain waltz that won’t stop echoing
and you dance without opening your umbrella
but the flowing tears are swallowed by the people.

They turn their back to the pain,
and while the sprouted flower keeps on being trampled
the petal that it lost are trampled by the people.

and without being hit by the sun, its 4 petal wither more and more…

In this world, which seems a crystal ball where only the things I don’t want to see float, only curtains are sold.
What children keep in their hands, rather than small guns, are refined and anonymous rifles.
The wind which follows the bodies from the gaps between the building, wholeheartedly stops without anyone noticing it
and wriggling clouds cover the sun of tomorrow.

The tomorrow in whom I will live in
it’s already been created (by someone else) but
the tomorrow you dream
maybe one day will bloom here.

The rain waltz won’t stop echoing
and you dance within the tragedies,
these flowing tears, will they ever reach you?

Without turning your back on the pain
you keep dreaming and ideal place for the tomorrow
and you get hit by the rain and trampled by the people.

I dreamt I started to forget
those petals floating on the water,
I’ll scoop one
for your sleeping heart.

Notes and other

Words in italic are in an incredibly comprehensible English in the original lyrics (finally).

I’m not only stunned by the good quality English of this song, but also amazed by the talent that this band is showing in every single release even being so young. The song is a critique to the society through the image of the rain, which in classic japanese culture is a symbol for salvation ( the rain which falls on the battlefield after a battle and washes away the blood), but here it is a polluted rain which stains everything. In the end anyway there’s message of hope for the listener (but not for the artists): don’t try to look away from the pain, embrace it and keep dreaming of tomorrow.

Kanji-Romaji

Translation

Ah, dimmed lights, stained walls,

a feverish warmth fills the small room.

Ah, my hips are swinging, our eyes swiftly meet,

and from the shaking bed our scattered hearts overflow.

Almost absent-minded, I  remember, the gossip

and the kiss which entangled us closing the distance between us

the moments before I was invited by you from the door of your bedroom

are empty and are not more than a mere sequence of events…

Ah, you swallow the moon and smile,

as if you obscured even the light of tomorrow.

Ah, but then, to its heart,

you start to gently stroke my wet pistil*.

Alone, in this wavering train

the sweat hasn’t gone yet.

Your wet hair sticked to your neck

and your sweet words won’t make me escape**.

Ah, my hand turns on your shoulders,

one day we won’t feel our emotions nor our warmth…

Ah, but even so, even my heart

looks like it will love the you of that day all alone

In the night the trains wavers

flowing through the townscape.

This fleeting and vanished dream passes fast

and the train melts into the night.

It keeps happening to me, but love words

won’t reach none of us already.

We could distract from our loniless by doubling checking on this

in fact, both of us don’t have any place to return to***…

Notes and Other

*= in case you haven’t noticed, here he’s clearly referring to his penis.

**= the word here has the more specific meaning of “holding something firmly between something” (including pinching something or holding something between chopsticks), but the implication is that she is not letting him escape.

***= usually, the image of the last train is used to indicate an activity that continues and a very late hour, forcing the characters to take the last train of the night, with the risk of not being able to go back home: if you lose this train, it will take hours before the first train of the morning. Basically, they fucked for a very long time and they lost the last train, so he’s basically inviting her to fuck again since they don’t have anything better to do.

Basically, it’s a song about choosing sex until the morning (of course, just for fun) instead of going back home and feeling lonely on the last train while remembering the past few hours of passion.

Mejibray – The end Translation

Kanji-Romaji

Translation

THE END?
TRUE END?
What kind of place is the”Now” that
THE END?
TRUE END?
is reflected in our eyes?

[to be or not to be.]
[to be or not to be.]
[to be or not to be.]
[to be or not to be.]

The plan that we suggested
has been torn to pieces and thrown away while the leviathan* laughs behind our backs.
For how many more years are we going to live
with our “forced smiles” without changing anything?

Will you cut off the future that you had found while trapped in the present?
There is a meaning  in the “reasons” that dropped from your hands in order to grasp it**.

THE END?
TRUE END?
Since we are breathing
there’s no meaning in loosing sight of those “unchanging days”
and in such a reality where we breathe the same here until the end of our anguishes
THE END?
TRUE END?
The “now” in which we are
is the world we created and in whom we live in.
“We live despite wanting to die”
and that is “TRUE”

There are days
in which I can’t speak any word
and it hurts… I can’t even hide my feeling of being lost.
I don’t understand the meaning of living,
and even the nausea won’t go away.
There is no one, nor I want to be either…

Will you cut off the future that you had found while trapped in the present?
There is a meaning  in the “reasons” that dropped from your hands in order to grasp it**.

THE END?
TRUE END?
Since we are breathing
there’s no meaning in loosing sight of those “unchanging days”

and that is “TRUE”

Will you cut off the future that you had found while trapped in the present?
There is a meaning  in the “reasons” that dropped from your hands in order to grasp it**.

THE END?
TRUE END?
Since the world
which is reflected in our eyes is true
THE END?

is the world we created and in whom we live in.
“We live despite wanting to die”

and that is “TRUE”
and that is“TRUE”
and that is “you” and
that is  “us”.

Notes and Other

*=the leviathan is a mythic creature that, according to legend, kills its victims by making them drown in the waves that it creates. Also, in the super famous philosophy/politics book called “Leaviathan” written by Tomas Hobbes, this beast is used as an image to represent “the government/the establishment”. While I’m not too sure about the fact that there might be a link between this song and Hobbes’ book, I can think try to risk and interpretation and say that the composer chose this creature because of the way it kills its victim: he might want to underline the feeling of drowning in this reality, unable to think about the future”, which is a concept that comes back during the song.

**= there’s a very famous proverb in Japanese saying “the more you try to put things in your hands, the more things fall from your hands” which is basically meant to warn people against greed. The general structure of the proverb is here as well, but the meaning appears to be slightly changed, suggesting that “you can’t obtain something without letting go of something else” which, in our case, means that “you can’t obtain the future (or a perspective of it) unless you sacrifice your present happiness”.

10 posts after: some update

I don’t know why I’m writing such a post, probably I got cocky just as I saw the stats of the blog, but that’s not what matters.

What matters is that when I started this blog I wasn’t even sure I could translate songs from Japanese but, as you can see, I managed to. And along with this knowledge, I realized that my main goal while translating those songs is to convey their feelings: I want people who listen to those songs to have goosebumps just as I do, in such a way I think that Visual Kei may be seen as a “global experience” and not just as “some freaky thing from Japan”. Probably got too much idealistic there, but I’m not going to erase that sentence.

In short words, whoever you are, please read my translation, enjoy it, leave a like, a comment or anything, but please, please, don’t tell me that those words and those melodies left you nothing: let me know that my words can still convey the magic of the ones in Japanese.

I’m still here…

Diaura – Enigma Translation

Kanji-Romaji

Translation

The lost child, alone,

melts away into this world with no answers.

It’s the enigma of someone who dreams the future beyond the red lotus,

but the shattered crystal ball won’t show anything.

Enigmatic Metamorphose

“Idologies”, there are so many varieties of them

everywhere

but in the end they come to the same solution, don’t they?

You praise a love that fits in these “ideals”

but you can already feel the taste of poison on your tongue.

I don’t understand what I want,

I don’t understand what am I,

I don’t understand the formula

to find the answer that I long for.

I touch my scars and become one with darkness…

It’s the enigma of someone who dreams the future beyond the red lotus,

but the shattered crystal ball won’t teach us anything.

“Idologies”, there are so many varieties of them

everywhere

but in the end they come to the same solution, don’t they?

Defending yoursel with a concept of freedom which fits in as “non-ideal”

your “know it all” face already spat poison.

I don’t understand what I want,

I don’t understand what am I,

I don’t understand the formula

to find the answer that I long for.

And in the end the lost child

lives this world with no answers.

It’s the enigma of someone who dreams the future beyond the red lotus,

but the shattered crystal ball won’t show us anything.

It’s the enigma of us dreaming the future at the end of the world,

even if the shattered sun has already burnt everything down.

I won’t let them

snatch away even our hearts…

Not even our hearts…

Notes and Others

The red lotus is a symbol for passion: the ideal world of which Diaura are speaking is one in whom people let go of their individual desire and live together. Such a dream is a utopia ( that’s why they talk about a shattered crystal: it is a symbol for “future”, but since it’s shattered it can’t reflect the ideals of who dreamt of it), but even so they keep on dreaming of it… why is that? Why they can’t just forget it? How can they dream perfection if they don’t even know what they desire? That’s the real enigma, which will stay there into their hearts, until someone will snatch it away along with their ideals.

Title: Dawn

There is no place where I can let go of my unexplicable sadness

and an unexplicable tomorrow will eventually come by without any reason.

I would like to go somewhere, but I still unable to go anywhere,

I live my daily routine of waking up with the moon and falling asleep with the sun.

With too much pride, one can only do small things

and I would just like to leave these meaningless words without any meaning.

I would like to just end all of this, but I still can’t do such a thing

and I live my daily routine of waking up with the moon and falling asleep with the sun.

Just like hope turns into hopelessness, hopelessness will eventually turn into hope

and with the thought that this world is about to end, I can sleep  tonight too.

In the eastern sky, that annoying light that you despise so much shines through

In the western sky, someone whispers “I hope tomorrow will be sunny”

The image that I scribbled down, has no shape nor colour

and if I line up my ideals, I cannot understand more than the ideals that I lined up*

With my desires pressed deep down my closet,

I live my daily routine of waking up with the moon and falling asleep with the sun.

Just like hope turns into hopelessness, hopelessness will eventually turn into hope

and with the thought that this world is about to end, I can sleep tonight too.

Some boys are running leaving the commercial district behind them

“We can go everywhere!” they say with the sound of their shoes that show no hesitation.

Our tomorrows are a chain of hopes,

“I can go everywhere”, I used to think back in the days.

There is no place where I can let go of my unexplicable sadness

and an unexplicable tomorrow will eventually come by without any reason.

But I’m still here singing, the world is still turning,

even without an explanation, even without reason…

We walk with one and only chipped** heart,

so be careful not to shake it too much.

Outside the open window,  the city shines with colours.

In the eastern sky, that annoying light that you despise so much shines through

In the western sky, someone whispers “I hope tomorrow will be sunny”

If you pay attention, someone has anticipated his clock, and they still are wondering if they are right or wrong.

I weigh on the scale isolation and participation,  and even today I won’t lose my own self.

Keep on living is an easy task, you know, somewhat similar to digging up a withered water source,

and if you repeat the same thing time and time again, one day a different morning will rise.

Morning will come…

Notes and others

*=the concept that the band is trying to explain is a bit too complex to be summarized in a single, so I’ll do it here. The whole song is about finding some kind of indication on how to live one’s life, and one could think that people can understand how to live their life if they follow their ideal. But ideal are just images and so no matter how much one can try to link them and live by them, they are something different from reality and do not offer much of a suggestion.

**= this verb also hints that an object is chipped, therefore missing a part: in the case of the heart, the feeling of missing something is what drives us in our lives.

It felt good going through these lines after a long time: I revisited some passages and improved the general meaning of some passages. Revising the translation I realized how much I was projecting my personal experience at the time on the song, ending up completely missing the point of some lines, but the general message of track wasn’t too far off from what I had imagined.

I kinda miss Hello Sleepwalkers and the fact that this song still sounds so good to me, really leaves me thinking that there hasn’t been any band in the j-rock scene that has been able to surpass their writing style: so simple, yet so profound.
