Title: Hazy moon night
Hazy moon night
A rotting crooked figure pierce and sticks into the childish heart without fading,
even if you try to put it back into those childish days, it hurts, it hurts.
Even though you can’t have superficial dreams*, a crooked figure fits deep into you,
and even if you keep changing your mind night after night, still…
The hand caressing the night plugs the petals of flowers, blooming and withering their smell lingers and sticks to you,
dreams** of desiring a flower bud recur and in the reality** a red moon sleeps.
A screaming and crying voice pierces painfully your ear so
let’s completely plug our ears with lukewarm feeling of our bodies.
The hand which is letting you down in the dark plucks the petals of flowers, to be cut open and die of noble death*** is a voluptuous beautiful sight.
dreams** of desiring sadness recur and in the reality** a night flower sleeps.
Even though your love maybe without lies, you still purr**** as if you don’t realize it,
under the gentle mask you display, you disguise your vulgar desires
but if you were to tear part that thin layer, it would be inconveniently lewd,
let’s just put everything into a box, close it and pretend as if your heart isn’t breaking apart.
The enjoyment that taint the purity are inconveniently lewd.
Young girl, rot, flower bud, bloom, dream, sleep, night,
hurt, poverty, fade, licentiousness, drowning, red, mist
Let’s make flowers bloom in the dark night, the moon will be tainted in red.
When you touch with your fingertips and tongue it becomes inconveniently lewd.
Covered in dew*****, let’s drown, these are the two sides of chastity and pleasure,
when the pain taints red it becomes inconveniently lewd.
The hand holding the darkness plucks the petals of flowers, after you bloomed and scattered, you end up pleading for mercy,
dreams** of desiring a fantasy recur and in the reality** you sleep counting on your finger******.
Notes and Other
*=a quote from the Iroha poem. I’ve explained its meaning so many times I think you may just google it by yourself.
**= the way this sentence has been written is as if these two words were in contrast.
***=the verbs used here have a very loose meaning and this sentence may be interpreted as “to be separated by your lover and lose your color”.
****=in a popular song with the same title as this, there’s a purring sound. Also, it’s a way to say “to remain docile to one’s own master”.
*****=it may also mean “tears”.
******=counting how many days until the protagonist will be thrown away by its lover.
So, this song is actually a big fucking deal. If you read “The tales of Genji” you know why.
“Oborozukiyo” it’s the title of the 8th chapter in which Genji, in order to cover its love relationship with Murasaki (which is also the protagonist of this song), starts hitting on an other women with whom he flirted in the past. But, when he wanted to check Murasaki’s reaction to this, she showed no reaction at all and he felt as she wouldn’t care about him anymore. So, he asks her to teach a younger girl how to be fascinating as her, as if he wanted to replace Murasaki with a younger woman.
Probably, the title of the chapter represents the feelings of Murasaki which, keeping her composure and not starting to argue is compared to the perfect calmness of the moon which is veiled by some mist, representing the tumultuous feeling in her heart (and also a bad sign for the future since she will soon die).
The songs tries to interpret the feeling of Murasaki, the girl who has been raised by Genji since the age of 8 to be the ideal woman, who, when she start to age, feels as if she is being thrown away after being forced to create her successor as lover of Genji.
