Title: You’re under arrest!!

You’re under arrest!

This is the story

of a wholehearted woman.

Dad and mom loved each other

and from the darkness I was born*

In the bloom of my years my love awakened,

with my unexperienced hands my cheeks turned red,

“Farewell to the introverted me” flying said the butterfly

and got intoxicated by honey.

I fell in love with that beautiful face of yours,

even what’s inside is secondary,

my heartbeat hurries, time makes me ill,

today too I can’t sleep,

I’ve been stolen this heart of mine

but I’m happy, I’m such a masochist!

My stretching fingers manage to reach out to you,**

I’ll get you for sure!

Run, young ladies!

Keep on going, young ladies!

Fold clothes, young ladies!

Hurray, hurray for the young ladies!

That beautiful face of yours is almost illegal,

even what’s inside is secondary,

my heartbeat hurries, time makes me ill,

tomorrow too I can’t sleep,

I’ve been stolen this heart of mine

but I’m happy, I’m such a masochist!

My fulfilled wishes are reality and illusion,

I finaaaally got you!

Cicadas singing engulf you,

with my experienced hands I pierce through the cicadas***,

from now on there will be only the two of us, the two us, the two us,

there will be no one to obstacle us.

I fell in love with that beautiful face of yours,

it would be good if you changed what’s inside,

time makes my rushing heart ill,

today too I won’t make you sleep,

I’ll give you all of my feelings,

it’s so fun, I’m such a sadist!

You know the place where I run off, right?

I’ll get you for sure!

I won’t let you go away!

Notes and Other

*= It’s a very “child-like” way of saying it, as it sounds as “from the darkness I came out saying hello”

**= not really sure about this line, I’m open for better suggestions, but I think I kinda got the gist of it.

***= I’m not sure if it’s a pun or not, but the expression “piercing cicadas” doesn’t actually mean anything outside from its literal meaning and kinda resembles the archaic expression used before for “cheeks turning red”.

The title is the stereotype catchphrase used in edo-style drama when the forces of law catch some kind of thief: the pun here is that instead of a thief, who gets caught is a lover.

I don’t really know how to interpret this song as I feel I’m missing too much context around it. As for what I can see from the text, it seems a parody, perhaps of those “edo-style” love songs that sometimes pop out in the scene, but perhaps I’m wrong.

Title: Rondo of the abandoned cat

The rondo of the abandoned cat

Look, I found it, a good secret place,

my dinner will be stale fried prawns,

I’ll drink the water of the gutter until my stomach is full,

where will I go tonight?

A dog with a collar

made fun of me,

but actually you, looking my way,

are the one most miserable and pitiful.

In the night when I sleep in the back alley where it’s raining,

for some reason I feel a bit lonely, but

I live free without being bounded by no one.

I stare at the light of house…

Ah

I start running

relying only the moonlight,

I melt into the night,

a rondo of the abandoned cat for me.

The abandoned cat with only one ear has gotten thinner,

its injured right leg has got infected,

that dog looking at me with a dirty look

will be sleeping in a warm bed?

In the night when I sleep in the back alley where it’s raining,

it seems tonight will be my last,

I lived free without being bounded by no one.

I stare at the light of house…

Ah

I fall asleep

there’s no one in the back alley,

all alone,

in this back alley I have been thrown away.

Only relying to the moonlight

which I watched for the last time,

I’m getting cold,

a rondo of the abandoned cat for me.

Notes and Other

Exactly as you think, a song about an abandoned cat which we can relate to a certain extent. It’s impossible to render in the translation, but the cat uses a lot of  さ as ender of its sentence which gives a sense of “I know stuff better than you”.

Title: Disguise

I hate boring things, I don’t like being second,

I want everything, I want to see, there’s no point in it always being the same.

All the things I still haven’t done with you before I die,

I want to do all of them, there’s no point in not completing them.

Tonight won’t go on the net**,

let’s talk seriously.

Now, with feeling of the night before the decisive battle,

I want to take off my disguise.

Twinkle one more time!

If it’s not you stompin’ stompin’*

Such a thing stop it stop it

who decided it?

The thing that got off

of you getting off,

if that so much of an obstacle, why don’t you throw it away?

I hate boring things, I don’t like being second,

I want everything, I want to see, there’s no point in it always being the same.

Tonight even the weekly magazines won’t even know**,

let’s talk seriously.

When tomorrow comes, you will forget everything

and the me of today won’t be there anymore.

Twinkle one more time!

If it’s not you stompin’ stompin’*

Such a thing stop it stop it

who decided it?

The thing that got off

of you getting off,

if you can’t part from it, embrace it!

I hate boring things, I don’t like being second

I hate boring things, I don’t like being second

I hate boring things, I don’t like being second

I hate boring things, I don’t like being second

Twinkle one more time, look here one more time,

twinkle one more time!

Twinkle one more time, look here one more time,

twinkle one more time, laugh!

Twinkle one more time!

If it’s not you stompin’ stompin*

Such a thing stop it stop it

who decided it?

No matter how much your figure

has changed don’t care don’t care

you just sparkle like a neon!

Twinkle one more time!

If it’s not you stompin’ stompin’*

Such a thing stop it stop it

Who do you want to become?

The thing that got off

of you getting off,

if that so much of an obstacle, why don’t you throw it away?

Twinkle one more time, look here one more time,

twinkle one more time!

Twinkle one more time, look here one more time,

twinkle one more time, laugh!

Notes and Other

Words in Italic are in English in the original lyrics.

*=I think it may be the image of someone stomping on the ground and complaining about something. For instance, she’s complaining about him not being the true him but just a disguise.

**=strange lines, but I guess since Polkadot Stingray got much popularity maybe there are some kind of gossip articles about Shizuku’s possible flame (?).

I was actually really curious about the direction Polkadot Stingray would take after their last album which showed the will to stop suffering about this past love story. “Bake no Kawa” now talks directly to the ex-partner in a very open-heart way (in fact, throwing away the mask, as the title suggests), asking him to do so as well: perhaps, doing so, he might start sparkling and laughing again after taking a decision once and for all.

Title: When I hugged you for the last time, you were crying a bit

The strongly tied bow-knot gently loosens,

we talked a lot about those promises of a vague future, haven’t we?

Since this is my nature,

I hurt you a lot,

and your smile suddenly became clouded, right?

When I hugged you for the last time, you were crying a bit,

from tomorrow our futures will be on our own.

The reason why I didn’t say “don’t go”

is because I felt I would have tainted your future more than I already did.

Without saying farewell

I waved hand saying “See you!”

The many lined up shoes became half,

I finally realized that you really had patience with me.

I didn’t even try to realize

that our slowly opening hearts were getting closer

and your tears increased in number, right?

When I hugged you for the last time, you were crying a bit,

if I let go of you now, we won’t meet again, right?

The reason why I didn’t say “don’t go”

is because it was my last atonement to wish a happy future for you.

That time that gently and slowly has broken

won’t ever come back, just like the two hands of a clock.

The time when we softly caressed each other

won’t ever come back, and your tears too*.

When I hugged you for the last time, you were crying a bit,

and you are probably crying even now, aren’t you?

Thank you for staying by my side until now,

I’ll try my best for a bit more**.

When I hugged you for the last time, you were crying a bit,

from tomorrow our futures will be on our own.

I must laugh, I must wave my hand in a cool way,

so that you could leave this place with a smile.

Without even saying farewell

I waved my hand saying “See you!”

and that was the end.

Notes and Other

*=doesn’t specifically say “too”, but it looks like it is implying a similarity between “that time” and “her tears”

**=I’m not sure, but it feels like he’s implying that “he’ll be trying his best all alone” as the verb 頑張る (ganbaru) is used for things one should do on his/her own.

Title: Half Discussion****

The gloomy and honest me

experienced for the first time

making such a decision,

it was as if a hole opened inside me.

Since I think that this is love

it’s a bit scary to talk to you,

it would be just fine if time went by

by just saying jokes.

I think that if you wanted to see a cute person,

it would be better if that person wasn’t me.

You, with your face which I don’t know if it will ever disappear,

spent your time by my side.

It’s fine even if you don’t accept everything I say*,

but, at least, tonight listen to my words,

my vaguely navy-blue shirt

and you, laughing with a similar face**.

It is said that one can live up to 100 years

but it’s not mandatory to live up to that age,

so I just want to die happy.

Even though I’m always strong and cold,

it’s strange,

when today you looked back at me

I came back to life.

If you like me, then let’s promise:

I want to love you for 1000 years, if possible.

The more you show me your true face, the more it gets far away,

I hate this clumsy side of me!

I’ll end up hating you really easily,

I’ve never been good with pretty things such as picturing a love song.

Even so, if you were to completely disappear,

I would be in trouble… Is there no other way?

There’s no such thing as Neverland.***

It’s fine even if you don’t accept everything I say*,

but, at least, tonight listen to my words,

my vaguely navy-blue shirt

and you, laughing with a similar face**.

My not at all cute love beaten by rain,

the song of the gloomy and honest me,

and even what will be of this love, soon we will understand, right?

The gloomy and honest me

experienced for the first time

making such a decision,

it was as if a hole opened inside me.

Even though I say so, this half discussion****

of me loving you

has no other reply

that it has been so because you were you.

Notes and Other

*=the true sentence literally says “everything of me” but in the context the used form felt more appropriate.

**=I’m not sure what his face is supposed to look similar too, perhaps it might be the vagueness of the blue of her shirt.

***= Probably because only children can enter Neverland, meaning that she has to act as an adult.

****=So, this word is real trouble. I opted for the more literal translation as the expression itself has many different meanings that may be valid but don’t really fit into the lyrics and also because in one sense this whole song it’s like a discussion about two people loving in which only one person speaks. For instance, the other meanings are “taking a story with a grain of salt”, “hearing only half of a story”, “not really taking to heart a discussion”, “only understand half of a discussion” and other similar meanings.

Lyric-wise, my personal favourite in this album. It’s the perfect song to close this long story and introduce the more relieving last track of the album, but without a too much care-free approach. I feel like the rest need no further explanation.

Look at me more

It’s not like I want a platonic kiss from you,

but for sure I desire that more than you,

I desire that way more than you.

My low voice whispering in your ear

melts the night.

Don’t say “I love you”!

It would just be painful.

Love, when given a physical form,

soon crumbles, doesn’t it?

Rather than the words “I love you”

hug me strongly,

because love, when given a physical form,

soon crumbles.

It’s not like I want to have platonic sex with you!

Hey, I care about that more than you,

I care about that way more than you.

The rhythm crawling in the darkness

melts the night.

Don’t say “I love you”!

It would just hurt.

Love, when given a physical form,

soon crumbles, doesn’t it?

Rather than the words “I love you”

I want you to hug me strongly,

because love, when given a physical form,

one day will surely crumble in its form.

She’s a girl who wants real love song

The misery and the feeling of emptiness,

everything, I want you to know everything,

I want you to touch the very bottom of my heart.

Hey, don’t say it!

Don’t say “I love you”!

There’s no need for words.

Love, when given a physical form,

soon crumbles, doesn’t it?

Rather than the words “I love you”

I want you to kiss me strongly,

because the cheap love made by words

soon crumbles.

Notes and Other

Words in Italic are in English in the original lyrics.

The dendrobium is a specie of flowers which grows attached to other trees. The analogy here is that love is not simply to be a called a “feeling” or something definite, but rather the necessity of living together, almost living off each other: the dendrobium usually grows attached to trees, almost as a parasite, but it blooms beautifully thanks to that.

To the point it couldn’t be seen again would be just right,

you know, I got tired of these identical days,

I don’t even know, my face,

I look for it but looks like it isn’t here.

By your side

I’m too busy crying and laughing.

Hello, hello, hello

to the saw some time ago

Hello, hello, hello,

let’s cut these useless talks.

To the point it couldn’t be seen again would be just right,

you know, I got tired of these identic days.

Inside a dream that looks like it keeps repeating,

I feel like I saw you.

You are not a hero,

you are the light making me human.

Hello, hello, hello

right now I would be fine even by just passing by you

Hello, hello, hello,

I think I can go everywhere.

By your side

I’m too busy crying and laughing.

Hello, hello, hello,

the world I wanted to look with forever

Hello, hello, hello

and that I now want to destroy, destroy it

to the point it couldn’t be seen again would be just right,

you know, I got tired of these identical days,

I don’t even know, something about me,

I look for it but looks like it isn’t here.

Notes and Other

A song about Shizuku’s feeling on living the same days she used to spend with her former partner: the feeling of living through the same days, unable to find anything of yourself and the desire to just destroy all those memories.

Unlike it is reported on some sites, the title means “radian” which is the unit to measure an angle (the part of plan enclosed by two lines): perhaps the meaning is that the song is a way to measure the distance the two (Shizuku and him, the two lines of the angles) since they used to be together.

Instead of the ring

I’ll give you a knife

We had a lot of fights

but I didn’t come to hate you,

how is it possible

that I want to meet you right now?

Marry me ’cause I hate u

I’m a bit annoyed by that

but it’s fine even if a lose

because I’ll always be by your side.

When we met we KISS KISS KISS

and we AH AH AN* until morning,

I got used to caressing you while softly biting your lips,

and when I’m alone you glimmer,

even though I had decided not to love you.

You act like a tsundere**

and drink your wine without saying a word,

don’t you dare you feel lonely!

Ah, this is so annoying!

Marry me ’cause I hate u

Quick! Show me your lovable face!

Don’t put on airs!

Why did it come down to this?

I don’t want to know and you talk about the errors of your past while crying.

Ah, I guess it would have been better if I didn’t ask,

how inconsiderate of me to make you pay attention to this encounter that won’t ever get cold.

Marry me ’cause I hate u

even if suddenly I couldn’t see your smile anymore

Marry me ’cause I hate u

It’s annoying but I won’t change

I won’t let you go

and now, the kiss of surrender…

Notes and Other

Words in Italic are in English in the original lyrics.

*= it might be unclear so I’ll write it here: those are clearly orgasms, implying they had sex.

**= perhaps you know this as well, but I’ll write it here as well: it’s a kind of behaviour consisting in acting grumpy in order to receive more attention by the partner.

I love being busy,

I hate stopping,

for some reason suddenly you stirred such feelings in me.

There’s no need for you to worry

if I’m gone or not, got it?

One day I’ll get on a ghost ship

and, together with the me of yesterday,

I’ll skip on and bid farewell.

I want to go beyond, sometimes I’m alone

but that’s scary,

so very much scary,

that’s what I understood when I became an adult.

In the meantime, you might have started to hate me,

but why simply being happy right now

is so bad?

Just like this, I’ll kiss the Earth,

go beyond my pre-marriage doubts*

and bid farewell to humanity.

I want to escape, even now I’m hurrying,

but that’s scary,

so very much scary,

the one who told me that,

who is she again?

I want to go beyond, sometimes I’m alone

but that’s scary,

so very much scary,

that’s what I understood when I became an adult.

I want to escape, even now I’m hurrying,

but it’s too early to do so,

maybe a bit too early,

just a bit more, just a bit more.

Notes and Other

*= I didn’t that that was a thing.

So, the number 7 in buddhism is a positive number indicating satisfaction and happiness. I don’t have hard evidences, but I feel like here Shizuku is singing as if she was a ghost unable to go beyond because she still has some remorse (the good old love story omni-present in Polkadot Stingray works). This would link with the whole concept of the album called with a word meaning “Nirvana”, as if at the end of the album, she might be able to get over this love story.

Title: But but but but but but but*

But! But! But!
But! But! But!
But! But! But! But!*
I can’t tell anyone!

To protect my own world
I have to keep it to myself.
Since no one would understand it
I kept living with this secret.

Are you a friend or a foe?
But! But! But!
But! But! But!*
However!
I can’t tell anyone!

I’ve got at most a couple of friends like me in this world
but now I’m feeling like I want more,
and maybe that’s too much to ask and could be no good.
But if by chance, by any chance whatsoever, I’ll have more in the future,
can I say that I like it?

If they say that I’m unusual
I’d like to ask what is considered normal.
Since it’ll never be possible to reach an understanding
I’ll have to live on running away!

I’m not bothering anyone in particular.
But! But! But!
But! But! But!*
However!
I can’t tell anyone!

Yesterday it saved me when I was dead tired.
Such a thing is a pleasure that no one understands,
but it’s all so dear to me.
So please, don’t take it from me, don’t be mad! I’m not slacking off!
Can I say that I like it?

Is the enemy someone close to me? Or is it society itself?
But! But! But!
But! But! But!*
However!
I can’t win!

Today I’ve found extraordinary friends in the city!
Therefore I’m not giving up living in this world
and I’ll be waiting for tomorrow.

If I have at least three friends like me in this world,
I could become conceited and
think that we could win.
But if by chance, by any chance whatsoever, the others will accept us,
can I say that I like it?
Can I say that I like it?

Notes and Other

Words in Italic are in English in the original lyrics.

*= So, there’s a triple sided word play on these “ga”. As explained in the link I credited on top, “ga” has the meaning of “but”/”however” but is also the onomatopoeia used in comics when a character says a cool phrase (like a superhero saying “Justice will always prevail” or something like this). Golden Bomber joke on this by using this onomatopoeia to emphasize the main character being a kind of nerd struggling to tell his/her passion to the partner.

Thanks to Manuel for the translation and the link.
