PIERROT – クリアスカイ (Clear Sky) Translation

Kanji

Translation

Title: Clear Sky*

I’m sure that this apparently unending blue** will never show a sing of the end

to us lower creatures, smashed down here, without even a single moment to the notice the perfectly clear sky.

That’s because our genes, which break the rules without any fear,

even though they lose their place to go to, they keep repeating the same cruel history.

And when that time comes, I feel that my arms will be able to protect you.

That’s because only I can hear your screaming voice

buried in the midst of the noise of the crazy mechanical city.

Stay with your hands up, so that I can see you

Wait for me without hesitation in this breaking down world,

on the hill where we made this promise that day,

let’s embrace while being hit by the grey rain pouring down,

and while being close and wet, let’s fall asleep.

Surrounded by the black lead angels of salvation, let’s kiss

Wait for me without hesitation in this breaking down world,

on the hill where we made this promise that day,

let’s embrace and fall down onto the scorching hot asphalt,

and while being burned and close, let’s fall asleep.

Notes and Other

*= the title is kept in katakana, to indicate a warped image of the blue sky.

**= the blue being, of course, the colour of the sky.

Pierrot took the ultra-cliché imagery of the blue sky of love and turned into a warped love song, where the vows of the love are just a mere detail about the imminent catastrophe that seems to be falling down on Earth. This is actually the first time I translated something from them, and I’m really impressed how casually they managed to pull this off.

Come on, in this night where will make our love* poems come true,

dance, light of life!

SUCK OF LIFE SUCK YOUR MIND

In a crevice between time and space which looked like they were frozen, I had a dream,

and I thought that I could arrive far away beyond my sight.

Come on, in this night where will make our love* poems come true,

dance, light of life!

In the night where we will get crazy to the point that our geniuses will dance,

ram into this miracle.

What is shining is the future you lost,

oh Moon, play**, shine! Forever,

dazzling

“BREAKING DOWN”

This ridicule die of fate is a natural attraction,

an ANGEL on the THRONE of worship,

the most dangerous form of life

A horrid pray to the demons

Come on, in this night where will make our love* poems come true,

dance, light of life!

In the night where we will get crazy to the point that our geniuses will dance,

ram into this miracle.

What is shining is the future you lost,

oh Moon, resound, shine! Forever

What will come up is our blood, our future

oh Moon, resound, shine! Forever,

play** with my life

Notes and Other

Words in Italic are in English in the original lyrics.

*= “love” is written in katakana, as to indicate some warped form of love

**= meaning “to play as an instrument”

Difficult to say what the meaning of the song except for the fact that Hazuki wants you to get crazy and feel the music. Most likely a live banger.

DIR EN GREY – ain’t afraid to die Translation

Translation

At that time where we used to walk together

there was no road,

even so, I always kept walking,

will I be able to meet you someday?

On the top of the gently sloping hill

the snow gently falls,

even if I already know it will never reach you

in your room, now,

I’ll give one of those flowers you used to love.

In the last day of snow of last year,

we formally exchanged vows,

but when I try to remember about that moment, it melted

and spilled out of our palms*

On the top of the gently sloping hill

the snow gently falls,

even if I already know it will never reach you

in your room, now,

I’ll give one of those flowers you used to love.

Alone, in front of the window,

I’m just staring at the snow,

while remembering about you,

I picture you fluttering** on the other side of the glass

and give you one last kiss…

Hey, please laugh!

Don’t cry,

I’ll be always watching you

from here

On the top of the gently sloping hill

the snow gently falls,

even if I already know it will never reach you

in your room, now,

I’ll give one of those flowers you used to love.

The light, quietly

paints white the town,

this is the last seasonal colour you saw.

I cried.

The thing called “reality” really is cruel, don’t you think?

This is the last seasonal colour you saw.

Both the seasons and your colours

will soon disappear, I think.

Snow will melt and in the corners of the streets flowers will bloom,

and the “colours” that you saw will gently melt away.

In this year’s last day of snow…

Notes and Other

*=So, it’s not uncommon in Japan to promise love to each other in a way that might look formal from a westerner point of view (they use an expression that is really close to the one used in a work environment). Being that in the lyrics they are said to be even more formal, I’m guessing that they shook hands for that: that’s why the promise, which figuratively was in their palms, melted (is the correspondent word for “breaking a vow” in Japanese) right away.

**= the verb “to flutter” can be used to mean also “to come to mind” or “to remember”. Since here’s not clear which nuance they wanted to choose, it is likely the chose this verb to convey both meaning, so I tried to keep this in the translation.

While browsing some info about the song, I found that DIR EN GREY seem to dislike this song: even it being one of their oldest song, it has never been put any “best of” compilation or any other album, unlike many other tracks. Also, the reason why the sound is so far from their usually is most likely because this album was produced by Yoshiki, who pretty much kept on doubling down on ballads for any of his productions.

The song seem to be about the mourning of a last person on the last day of winter, relating the memory to the snow, as if to mean that both will soon disappear.

Congratulations on your graduation.

I’m very happy for you all.

Thinking about how I calmed you down with mysterious powers during the entrance ceremony makes me nostalgic.

Even after that, it’s been hard when you broke the window glass, got stomach aches, got fat and broke your knees.

Even so you…

Sorry for the sudden interruption, but I inform you that I am an alien

Lastly, I will say some words in my planet’s language

(impossible to translate alien language)

Principal, thank you for your kind words.

Cherry trees, cherry trees, all right! Good luck to you!

It’s sad but let’s work hard for our future!

You’ve been the first person I loved

Cherry trees, cherry trees, all right! Good luck to you!

MY HONEY, let’s work hard for our future!

And I ended up not telling you MY LUV

Cherry trees, adiós

Go-go-go-good luck to you!

I-I-I-I’ll do my best!

Adiós

And now, a word from the president of the Parents-Teacher Association

Congratulations on your graduation! Congratulation, graduation!

I’m the PTA president! My speech is dope, too!

This is the coolest stage; you’re shining so hard!

I’m the president! PTA! I’m the president! PTA! I’m the president! PTA! I’m the president!

one last time with a smile! Let’s go!

Cherry trees, cherry trees, all right! Good luck to you!

It’s sad but let’s work hard for our future!

Let’s walk together through a blizzard of falling cherry blossoms!

Cherry trees, cherry trees, all right! Good luck to you!

Now it’s time for us to depart

And to you, our friends, good luck!

Cherry trees, adiós

In the se-se-se-season of che-che-che-cherries

the same cherry tree never blooms twice

Go-go-go-good luck to you!

I-I-I-I’ll do my best!

Both you and me, cherry trees, cherry trees

Sakura

Every Japanese will feel or remember

something about this word:

encounters, farewells, sadness, joy…

But when the cherry blossoms bloom,

it’s always the beginning.

The cherries don’t tell us anything.

But they will bloom again next year.

If you get lost, let’s gaze at them.

Blooming cherry blossoms.

Cherry blossoms which never bloomed.

What did I get now?

and what did I lose?

At that time, maybe I’ll be able to see my new path.

Sakura, adiós, sakura.

Notes and Other

Translation by Manuel, notes by Manuel and me

Words in Italic are in English or Spanish in the original lyrics

*= the expression itself has also the meaning of graduating, which links to the general theme of the song.

**= these are two lines from probably one of the most famous poems of Heian Period, they recite “No matter how colourful flowers are, they will inevitably wither…” and goes on preaching on how everything is fleeting in this reality. Don’t expect any profound message from this song: these verse are just there because they are often linked with the sakuras, but it’s actually an attempt to make the song even more nonsensical.

***= the word itself is “spring”, but can be interpreted in many different ways, we chose “prime”.

****= These are really common activities/events which happen during the school period and here everyone is remembering those moments.

Notes and Other

Words in Italic are in English in the original lyrics.

*= the word itself has no meaning alone, but it is a kanji meaning “to remain” and it’s also used in the word “cruel” (残酷, “zankoku”). I’ll discuss more about this after the notes.

**= it seems they tried to connect the words “psychopath” (spelled “saikopasu” in Japanese), “past” and “trap” or “trip”, probably to indicate a more intimate relationship between these terms.

The lyrics themselves don’t make much sense, clearly meaning that the protagonist of the song has lost his/her mental stability. What kept from dismissing the song just as pure jibberish of a mad person, is that some lines in Japanese (“You are no more, I’m no more” etc) reminded me of a shocking event in ’90s Japan, where a child killed his parents, then committed suicide after leaving a note which nonsense words which look really similar to the lyrics (I might be slightly incorrect, so I’ll double check on this event asap).

Putting all these elements together, this looks like a song about the thoughts of someone who just killed someone else and it’s slowly getting crazy. Usually, the “purpose” of a murder is “to get rid of someone”, but unlike the expectations, the body of the victim “remains” there, as a horrible testimony of the cruelty (see note *). The fact that the body is still there is what makes the protagonist crazy (psychopath), because he/she’s trapped by something from the past, something sends him/her to a trip to the past instead of a future: this is the trap of death.

The last lines suggest that the protagonist has completely given in to madness, feeling like that his/her own self is no more, and a new, crooked one is about to substitute that.

Again, these are all just speculations, so I’m really open to other interpretation.

Jin-Machine – 手を洗WAR (Te o AraWAR) Translation

Kanji: Taken from the video

Translation

Title: This is a WAR, let’s wash our hands!*

First wash your hands with water, then apply the soap

Froth and rub the palms, then do the same with the back of your hands

Use the palm of one hand to wash the back of the other, both left and right

Also wash your fingers one by one

To better wash between the fingers you should join your hands like you were praying

We usually forget the nails, they’re a bit difficult to wash. Make a scoop with each hand,

then scrub the nails of one hand on the other to wash them thoroughly

Grab your wrists and rub them in a spinning motion

Just wash the part that is within reach

Then rinse everything off with running water

Lastly, dry your hands with a clean towel. This is how you’ll wash your hands every day

It takes 30 seconds or more

This is a WAR, let’s wash our hands! This is a WAR, let’s wash our hand!

Washing your hands and and doing gargles** prevent the infection

This is a WAR, let’s wash our hands!*

This is a WAR, let’s wash our hands!*

When you get back home remember to always wash your hands!

Notes and Other

Translation and notes by Manuel.

*=it’s a pun between the last sounds of 洗おう (let’s wash) and “war”, the title I chose is an attempt to keep both of the meanings in the pun.

**= Gargles are often a suggested practice during winter times to prevent colds and such in Japan, they are not really a common thing in other countries (not that I know).

It’s just a stupid song about the washing your hands doing the quarantine. Stay safe and enjoy!

BUCK-TICK – ドレス (Dress) Translation

Kanji-Romaji

Translation

I doze off with you, in front of the mirror, your fingernails are of a light pink,

your hand suddenly shows its delicacy and closes my lips.

That day, we promised love to each other,

but now none of us seems to remember that…

You’ll listen to a boring song and stare outside the window,

so I’ll put on that dress and show you my dance,

are you loosing control? Tell me…

One day, we’ll be swept away by the wind,

but now none of us seems to remember that…

Why don’t I have wings to flutter towards the sky,

just like the wind, like the snow, why?

I have no wings to sink into the night,

just like the stars, like the moon, ah…

Don’t forget about those days overflowing with love,

even though I can’t even remember your face…

One day, we’ll be swept away by the wind,

but now none of us seems to remember that, oh…

Why don’t I have wings to flutter towards the sky,

just like the wind, like the snow, why?

I have no wings to sink into the night,

just like the stars, like the moon, ah…

Why don’t I have wings to flutter towards the sky,

just like the wind, like the snow, why?

I miss this love and this wound too,

but now I long for you and it’s hurting, ah…

Notes and Other

Yes, since I’ll need these old songs for my thesis, I decided to do some kind of practice here on the blog.

Ballads have been a trademark genre for Visual-Kei, at least in the 90s, so it’s interesting to see hoe everyone approached such theme which, in the end, it’s always the same: I love her, but she doesn’t love me back.

Unlike the X’s, Buck-Tick’s version is much more symbolic and rather than anger or crazyness, there’s melancholy: while 紅 (Kurenai) shows a man desperate for love under the rain, this song shows a man in space outside time, floating in a world where the past itself seems so vague, only the love and the wound remains.

Taking off, Taking off

This invisible apparition*.

I’d bring you anywhere!

I look over the city from up here,

Well, you are MY STAR

Even if I close my eyes, I can hear

the sound of my impulses bursting open.

Uh, just a moment

I am just waiting for my

the smell of an instant of stillness

and I remember about you.

It’s like the fantasy of a Friday afternoon

where I think about when we parted our ways.

Give me a second

I daydream of falling in love with you,

what are you doing right now?

I might even go anywhere if you were with me.

Quick!

Taking off, Taking off

This invisible apparition*.

Even if I close my eyes, I can hear the sound of my impulses bursting open.

You’re just moving on, Moving on

Let’s run somewhere far away right now!

I’d bring you anywhere!

I look over the city from up here,

Well, you are my JET STAR

All alone in this room I can’t keep calm,

all alone, my heartbeat is burning.

Nobody like you

The dance floor where I fell in love with you

is the too small room of mine,

ah, don’t make that face as if you didn’t know me…

Loving you, Loving you

I don’t need nor truth nor lies, Up to you

All alone in my room, the smell of the summer going on lingers

I’m just moving on, Moving on

Until I met you,

hey, what kind of expression I used to have?

All I need is you

(Ladies and gentlemen, for your comfort we will be dimming the main cabin lights. If you wish to continue reading, you will find your reading light in the panel above you. Thank you.)

Quick!

Taking off, Taking off

This invisible apparition*.

Even if I close my eyes, I can hear the sound of my impulses bursting open.

You’re just moving on, Moving on

If it’s true that words spoken by instincts only lead to disaster,

then it’s fine even if you don’t say anything!

Where will we go?

Taking off, Taking off

I can’t wait until tomorrow, Taking a trip

Let’s meet

before this summer ends!

Nobody like you

Notes and Other

Words in Italic are in English in the original lyrics.

*=it’s kind of an unusual word, probably has been chosen because there’s a word with the same pronunciation meaning “real object” and the aim to play on the duality of the apparition, which seems so real, yet it’s just in our heads.

A nice songs from Polkadot Stingray, talking about how the memory of a person we still can’t forget makes us fly on the wings of imagination, almost as if we were taking a trip on a plane. Also,at first I thought it was just a joke, but Jet-Star is a well known Japanese flight company and this song is supposed to be sponsored by them for their new campaign:  see for yourself

BUCK-TICK – 悪の華 (Aku no Hana) Translation

Kanji

Translation

Title: The Flowers of Evil*

Let’s end these games already,

end your life, breaking down

Lend me that hand, I’ll throw away everything,

I’m a crazy clown with bad blood**

I was supposed to be dreaming, but I only saw unsightly things,

my aged desires are falling down

Farewells are all that there is,

I’m a crazy clown with bad blood**

It’s not like I’ve forgotten about my burning blood,

it’s just that a sweet warmth has soaked into my eyes,

[In these] Lonely days

the sun is gleaming*** and I’m just a blue-blind boy holding a blue loneliness in my hand.

It’s not like I’ve forgotten about my burning blood,

it’s just that a sweet warmth has soaked into my eyes

This world keeps turning in the gaps between my fingers,

I’ll welcome the knife, sparkling hot, in my chest and…

[In these] Lonely days

the sun is gleaming*** and I’m just a blue-blind boy holding a blue loneliness in my hand.

[In these] Lonely nights

I’ll keep screaming in the freezing nights, get crazy

blue-blind boy

[In these] Lonely days

the sun is gleaming***, smash down that blue loneliness

Blue-boy

[In these] Lonely nights

the Blue-boy

keeps screaming in the freezing night and gives into craziness.

Notes and Other

Words in Italic are in English (with some additional corrections) in the original lyrics

*=the song is most likely inspired to a very personal interpretation of Baudelaire’s work “Les fleurs du mal”, probably referring to the sensation of feeling an outcast and just wanting to give to loneliness, has if it was some kind of dream.

**=it’s most likely a rough translation from Japanese, hinting at the feeling of one’s blood being poisoned or even bad because of a illness.

***=the image resembles the one that can be found in Baudelaire’s poem “The sun”, where the sun shines too bright and he wanders around the town as an outcast.

It’s interesting to see how the sensation of feeling crazy, outside of the world, is shared between Buck-Tick and X, but how differently they decided to express it: the X in a direct way, Buck-Tick in a more symbolic way.

Dadaroma – POINT OF NO RETURN Translation

Kanji

Translation

Search for the true thing buried in these times,

you’d be better deciding what’s true and what’s false by yourself

It’s always like that, those like us are all alone,

you’d be better deciding even if we can avoid fighting or not by yourself.

But in the end, whatever we do, we die

so, knock me down one more last time.

Make me laugh, make me hate you,

you’d be better understanding what’s true and what’s false by yourself

It’s always like that, those like us are all alone,

you’d be better deciding even if we can avoid fighting or not by yourself.

But in the end, whatever we do, we die

so, knock me down one more last time.

Be laughed at, be hated, it’s fine like that, it’s better like that,

there’s a tomorrow which is just for you, go towards it

I do not seek, I find

Notes and Other

Words in Italic are in English in the original lyrics

This is technically the last song from Dadaroma, as they announced again a hiatus, that’s why it is probably addressed to the fans, telling them to go look for the truth one their own, without following their lead no more.
