Title: Rain Waltz

Filthy rain. You become filthy by rain.

“greed”
The grown-ups try to make money
from pure and childish dream.
We keep on living without realizing.

“greed”
The teacher said that we’re
all equal since we were born.
He was only reading out what
was written in the book.

I’ll bring down the curtain on this world, which seems a crystal ball where only the things I don’t want to see float
Rather than small guns, they make children keep in their hands sharp and anonymous rifles.
The wind which caresses the bodies from the gaps between the building, quietly stops without anyone noticing it
and wriggling clouds cover the sun of tomorrow.

The muddy water turns into
clouds and rains heavily over the world.
We believe it to be blessed rain
and drink it without doubting it.
The small flower which blooms by
the wayside grows from it.
A filthy colored flower blooms.

It nails me down

this rain waltz that won’t stop echoing
and you dance without opening your umbrella
but the flowing tears are swallowed by the people.

They turn their back to the pain,
and from the flower that grown despite people stomping on it
petals fall and they are trampled as well.

and without being hit by the sun, its 4 petal wither more and more…

I’ll bring down the curtain on this world, which seems a crystal ball where only the things I don’t want to see float
Rather than small guns, they make children keep in their hands sharp and anonymous rifles.
The wind which caresses the bodies from the gaps between the building, quietly stops without anyone noticing it
and wriggling clouds cover the sun of tomorrow.

The tomorrow in whom we will live in,
even if it’s an artificial future,
I hope it will bloom here
as the tomorrow you dream of.

The rain waltz won’t stop echoing
and you dance within the tragedies,
these flowing tears, will they ever reach them?

Without turning your back on the pain
you keep dreaming and ideal place for the tomorrow
and you get hit by the rain and trampled by the people.

I dreamt I started to forget
those petals floating on the water,
I’ll scoop one
for your sleeping heart.

Notes and other

Words in italic are in an incredibly comprehensible English in the original lyrics (finally).

I’m not only stunned by the good quality English of this song, but also amazed by the talent that this band is showing in every single release even being so young. The song is a critique to the society through the image of the rain, which in classic japanese culture is a symbol for salvation ( the rain which falls on the battlefield after a battle and washes away the blood), but here it is a polluted rain which stains everything. In the end anyway there’s message of hope for the listener (but not for the artists): don’t try to look away from the pain, embrace it and keep dreaming of tomorrow.

Title: Me

Since there is still time

before the morning comes,

I’ll look into some faint memories,

will I win the lottery prize for New Year’s Eve?

Since I’ll probably waste tomorrow,

since I can properly make up my plans,

don’t give up on me,

give me more love,

like a cannon,

if you won’t give me love, I’ll be a lost child,

there’s nothing in this world that can surprise me!

Since I don’t have any talent, I DON’T LIKE myself,

I might realize it

after I fall in disgrace

it’s a possibility,

I’m saying, maybe one day, ok?

How long?

I’m asking you!

It’s big problem, I don’t have any self-confidence.

I don’t know the you

who doesn’t know me.

I only know the me

who doesn’t know you.

When will you realize that?

You just don’t know,

please don’t realize it,

I hate me,

so uncool, right?

Even though I sing a cool song,

even though the uncool me sings a song,

the pretty you won’t turn towards me, right?

Someone, please, sing instead of me!

It’s a life in which we cross each other without encountering,

what the hell, I don’t care if you get nervous about it,

I envy bold people but

if I changed my appearance

because of my inferiority complex which drenches me in tears, will something change?

I entered a major label,

what has changed?

error, error, error,

if I hit the jackpot and sell successfully, there’s no need to sacrifice anything, right?

I’m strange so it’s strange but

with this strange voice and strange lyrics

I came this far, it is strange so,

no matter what everyone says to me,

it’s because I am strange.

My feelings,

your feelings,

the feelings of everyone, I want to make them good.

Self-satisfaction is good, you’re fine just with that,

if you don’t have that mindset you can’t make it, woof*,

I stretch my ideas,

your help is always needed.

Since the answer is always “no”, there are no questions,

If you prepare in advance, you won’t be sorry,

go ahead, go on,

I want you to fantasize on me,

that me is your me so

create

the imaginary me,

fantasize on

the imaginary me.

When will you realize that?

You just don’t know,

Please don’t realize it

I hate me,

so uncool, right?

Even though I sing a cool song,

even though the uncool me sings a song,

the pretty you won’t turn towards me, right?

Someone,please, sing instead of me!

I’ll compose cool songs!

Even though I am not cool I’ll sing songs!

Even though the pretty won’t turn towards me

I won’t let anyone

sing instead of me!

Words in Italic are in English in the original lyrics.

*= yes, in this part she’s imitating a bark just because the sound matches another one in the same verse. It’s just cute, don’t think too much about it.

Another classic from young Daoko’s repertory. She managed to become pretty popular when she was pretty young (still in high school) and these songs seem kinda reflect the thoughts of a teenage girl catapulted in the major music world perhaps a bit too early. Nonetheless, the freshness of the lyrics, the flow and the simple beats have a distinct “Daoko Flavour”, something that she wanted to homage in her first “mature” album Thank you Blue (Blue here meaning the young days).

lynch. – ALLIVE Translation

we arrived

I had a dream, I was together with you

inside a time so long we could almost get lost in it

Tonight, let’s make that dream come true

now bask into that light raining on you

Now, break through this place

shine and make my body burn

Reaching you, surpassing life to the brink of death

my heart thinks of you*

I had a dream, I was together with you

inside a time so long we could almost get crazy in it

I’ll make it come true, yes, for real

now bask into the future raining down on you

Now, break through this place

shine and make my body burn

Reaching you, surpassing life to the brink of death

my heart thinks of you*

Go forth, morph your body, yes, in something crazy

yes, we arrived

Devote all of you, become crazy

yes, we’re alive

Everyone holds onto one’s dream

and even if they won’t come true, they still fight,

that’s what’s called “living”, don’t you think?

For you, for me

Now, break through this place

shine and make my body burn

Reaching you, surpassing life to the brink of death

my heart thinks of you*

I imagine a dream for eternity*

Notes and Other

Words in Italic are in English in the original lyrics.

*= the words here are written using katakana and kanji, a writing style commonly found in ancient Japanese poetry which, supposedly, represent the truest form of expression of “the Japanese spirit”. In this case, it is a way for the composer to show that he’s earnestly writing to convey a sincere feeling of affection to the public.

A song written by lynch. right after most of the heavy restrictions for COVID-19 were lifted. During the lockdown the band started an amazing iniziative to raise money for the livehouses which, unable to provide a safe environment for concerts, were economically struggling. This song marks their comeback to live exhibition, playing on the pronunciation of  the word”allive”, which may sound as “we arrived” (we are back), “we’re alive” and “we are live”. I think the rest is pretty much self-explanatory.

Daoko – okay! Translation

Translation

I’m still waiting for the two point connected by the line

to link with me.

Since I somehow live

without feeling or reacting to anything,

somehow I got fed up with everything.

I feel like I’m incompatible with society,

hello? Hello? Does this reach anyone?

Hello? Hello? I got tired of rational thinking.

Looks like your original colour has dried out,

even though I paint it over with my colour, it won’t stay, right?

I hate the word “one day”,

it’s so uncertain and un-shaped.

Until when should wait for this “one day”?

I’ll pretend not to see it and run from reality,

rather than the present of always, at least it will be my present,

don’t leave behind your present!

I’m not okay

It hasn’t come yet, it hasn’t come yet but

You’re not okay

The dreams haven’t yet come, the dreams haven’t yet come but

But that’s ok

It’s fine like that, for sure, for sure.

Even though we don’t have wings, we’ll stretch our back muscles,

we are angels!

Okay!

Somehow, somehow, somehow,

how many times have piled up in vain my half lives,

sometimes I realize that I’m still not complete,

I’m a kid that just need to try, I’m a kid that just need to try,

so just do it! If you do try to do it,

you won’t get power but something useful.

But I don’t hate that me ♥

Because the mistake I made yesterday,

the modest kiss from the goddess,

the traumatic scars of the heart,

are for sure the necessary nurturing for tomorrow.

Hey yo Mr. Miss Future

Welcome! Shining New Jacks

The colours of the everyday, paint over it, shine, shine,

somehow.

Okay!

Ha ha* with my sighs

This single room is full of CO2

ha ha* and it’s leaking out

from inside my bed, I send an SOS

You can’t be like that

It can’t be like that other way

Can’t we do anything but fitting in the norm?

If I change my point of view will my friend change?

The soul and the body have very contrasting feelings

The only thing certain is uncertainty

I’m sorry, wait just a sec, okay?

I actually don’t feel like signing any insurance contract

It’s bad, and if it goes on like this,

it will be really… maybe…

OK OK Something will happen either way

but what will be the message of tomorrow?

OK OK Anything might happen

sooner or later good luck, come on

I’m not okay

It hasn’t come yet, it hasn’t come yet but

You’re not okay

The dreams haven’t yet come, the dreams haven’t yet come but

But that’s ok

It’s fine like that, for sure, for sure.

We are dirty, but we are not corrupted,

we are angels!

Okay!

Notes and Others

Words in Italic are in English in the original lyrics.

*=this is supposedly the sound made by the protagonist while sighing.

I’m so happy they finally decided to give a music video to such masterpiece of young Daoko era. I like how the lyrics are really simple, just a long flow of consciousness of a teenager drowning in the doubts of a truly puzzling modern world. But what’s even greater is that all the lyrics are full of puns that linked each verse to the following, breaking the rhythm and creating assonance, a rap masterpiece in the Japanese scen if you ask me. That’s it, I’m done simping for Daoko.

Notes and Other

*=I think the image that they are referencing is the one of a solar flare detaching from the sun. The reason why I’m saying that is because if you search for the term “furea” in Japanese, the only thing that that pops out that isn’t a car is the image of a solar flare. This ties up pretty neatly with the beginning of the song that says “I almost froze” and the expression “going the other way” which better suggest the act of moving fast against a force (usually the wind, but can also be gravity in the case of a solar flare) that pushes someone toward a certain direction. I think the flare is a term that is linked with film (which would work nicely with the whole setting of the videoclip), but doesn’t really work with the other words used in the same part, so I’m more inclined to consider my first hypotesis right. Again, I might be completely wrong.

**= the expression can also be interpreted in a literal way, however there’s another saying in Japanese which is “a dream inside a dream” meaning “something that will never come to life”.

I think this song is all about seeing things in one’s head, almost as if it was some kind of film: the whole videoclip looks like the set of a film that keeps changing, in the same way that the fantasy of the protagonist change.

This is an interesting addiction to the narrative of the band which, right from their start, talks about a failed love relationship and the struggle of the getting over it. At the beginning of the song it looks like the main character (which, by association, is always associated with Shizuku, the lead singer and the composer) has met by chance with her (yes, I’m already assuming it’s her) ex but he won’t even bother to look at her, leaving her frozen on the spot. And while she’s still constantly daydreaming about him, unable to take ahold of the situation, she starts fantasizing about different scenario with her ex. They even say it: “it is FICTION (yes, the caps lock is theirs, not mine) that sounds like nonfiction”.
